Cyberculture can be defined by the emergence of computers, their role in the progression of digital media and the digitisation of society. The heterogeneous nature of the term is hard to fully define, in the sense of the now, the 21st century; cyberculture mixes complex technological advancements with multifarious social and cultural movements based in an increasingly virtual existence. How does abstract painting fit into cyberculture? And does painting sit outside cybercultural influence?
I paint in a traditional way and also via digital means, the two feed into each other, the digital contributes to the real and vice versa. There is an interchange of form taken from abstract drawing, which underpins my work. Scanned drawings are ‘painted’ on the computer and ideas of colour and line are ‘translated’ onto canvas. |
